Man's Best Friend

We are always on the hunt for amazing animal stories to share and have recently come across two heartwarming animal rescues.  One of the rescues happened right here in Nebraska!

Icey, the Dalmation, was rescued from the Big Blue River near Crete, Ne.

A dog rescued from an ice block floating down the Big Blue River in southeast Nebraska has found a warm home.

Nebraska City's chief paramedic, Rodney Turpel, told KMTV that the dog named Icey is fitting in well with his family and their five other Dalmatians.

Icey was rescued Dec. 19 from the river near Crete. A fire official has said the dog was using its front paws to hang onto the ice block, but the rest of its body was in the water. Firefighters grabbed the dog, pulled it out of the water and took it to an animal hospital.
The dog was not wearing any tags, and her owner never came forward. She's believed to be 11 or 12 years old.

Dog Rescued After Being Wedged Between Two Walls

It didn't last 127 hours, and the outcome was less frightful, but the ordeal must have been pretty horrible for a California dog who got stuck in a very tight space between two walls last week.

On Friday morning, Riverside County Animal Services received a call about a barking dog. The caller likely had no idea the dog was trapped between two cinder-block walls, one of which borders a property owned by the Coachella Valley Water District, a water-distribution agency.

The water district's workers arrived after the dog had been trapped for a couple of hours in the crawl space, which is mere inches wide. It took another 45 minutes to knock a hole in one of the walls to reach the reddish-brown Shar-Pei mix, who was barking, wagging his tail and responding to officers during the rescue effort. A district employee fed the hungry dog a bean-and-cheese burrito.

It's likely the dog, called Wally by his rescuers and estimated to be about 4 years old, was was “chasing a cat or other critter,” says Riverside Animal Services spokesman John Welsh.

The pup was treated for dehydration at an animal hospital but is now is now doing well at the county animal shelter in Thousand Palms, Calif. He was not wearing any identification and does not have a license, but Animal Services is waiting for an owner to claim him. If no one comes forth within five days, Wally will be put up for adoption.
